Benefits of having Cavity Wall Insulation
Having cavity wall insulation will save you up to £260 per year on your energy bills - Makes your home warmer in the winter and helps prevent condensation on the walls and ceilings
- Reduces the amount of heat build up in the Summer, keeping your home cooler
- By insulating your home you will be playing your part in reducing your carbon footprint and also the effect of global warming
You can check to see if your property appears suitable for Cavity wall insulation by checking the brick pattern on your property :
- Where bricks are positioned lengthways cavity walls are present, where bricks are placed head on and lengthways, solid walls are present meaning there is no cavity to fill (generally homes built before 1930 have solid walls).
- You can also measure the thickness of your homes external walls. Cavity walls are at least 30cm thick whereas solid walls are only around 23cm thick. It is easiest to check at a door or window.
- Generally houses built after 1995 are likely to have had a cavity wall installed during construction, so in this case Cavity Wall Insulation is not necessary.
Cavity Wall Insulation explained
Cavity wall insulation involves filling a brick cavity with an insulating material, this decreases the amount of heat which escapes through the walls.
Surveying Process
Prior to Installation, our fully trained professional Surveyor will conduct a full 'no obligation survey' on your property to be carried out at a convenient time to fit around your busy schedule.
The survey usually takes approximately 20 minutes.
As part of the survey, we will need to drill a small hole in the outside of your property (approx 10mm wide). We then carry out a Borescope Inspection inside the cavity. This is done for various reasons, but mainly to determine that your property is suitable for Cavity Wall Insulation and that the cavity has a minimum depth of 50mm. Any properties with a smaller cavity cannot be insulated.
We will also need to check what type of heating appliance you have i.e. Gas or Oil etc. to ascertain if additional ventilation will be required. Our Surveyor will advise on this when undertaking the survey. The Surveyor must undertake these checks prior to installation, so it is essential that they have access to the inside the property whilst undertaking the survey.
After carrying out the full survey our Surveyor will provide you with a written quotation which is valid for 60 days.
Should you wish to proceed with the Cavity Wall Insulation, the installation process is complete in 3 easy steps:
- We will arrange an installation date when you would like to work to be carried out. Our Surveyor will be able to arrange a date there and then for you
- The Installers will arrive at your house to carry out the Installation. You only need to sign the Declaration forms – there are no forms to fill in!
- Upon completion of the insulation, K G Insulation will apply for your Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA) 25 year Guarantee which will be posted to your home address. Please allow up to 90 days for your Guarantee
Installing Cavity Wall Insulation
We will drill small holes in the outside of your property (about the size of a 10p coin). The first row of holes are drilled one metre from your property’s damp course, further holes are then drilled 1.5 meters apart in width and 1. 5 meters in height apart (forming a ‘W’ pattern) until the exterior of the house has been drilled to the correct drill pattern.
The Insulation material is fed through the holes until the cavity is completely full. The injection machine is set so that when each hole has been filled to the correct density, the machine will automatically cut off. The holes are then filled with mortar to match the existing wall.
The Installation process usually takes around two to three hours to install but the time does depend on the size of the house.
Facts about installing Cavity Wall Insulation
All of the drilling is carried out from the outside of your property so there is no internal mess!
Cavity Wall Insulation actually helps to prevent damp and illuminate
condensation as it blocks the warm air from pulling the cold air through the cavity. We only use the best products - Rockwool Energy Saver which is approved by the British Board of Agrement (BBA)
